Aurora : Photos from our day trip to Aurora, NY. Aurora is a very lovely, quiet and picturesque town located on the shores of Cayuga Lake. It is also the home of Wells College, a nationally recognized liberal arts college. It's definitely worth your time to stop by and check out the homes and shops if you're in the area as this town is a real gem. Baldwinsville : Baldwinsville, New York, has a few older homes of interest but no real section of historical grandeur. It does have Lock 24 nearly in the center of town, which provides some interesting photo opportunities, along with a number of shops lining the edge of the Lock. On a whole, it's a nice town, but I wouldn't drive out of my way to visit it unless you're interested in the New York Lock system or one of the other attractions highlighted here.

Caughdenoy Lock : Caughdenoy Lock is located across the Oneida River from the small hamlet of Caughdenoy, which seems to be just a few buildings at the intersection of Routes 12, 33, and 37. To be truthful, there wasn't a whole lot there to see, but the place seems popular enough with local fishermen.

Cortland : For years, we considered Cortland, New York, as just the midway point between Syracuse and Binghamton; but after actually going there, we have changed our minds. Cortland has some very neat things to boast: the 1890 House and other elegant old homes on Tompkins Street; a nice old-fashioned downtown area; a few beautiful stone churches on or near (what else) Church Street; and the Cortland County Courthouse.

Geneva : Geneva, New York's Historic District is definitely worth checking out if you like older homes and architecture. We found it to be one of the nicer towns we have visited so far. Very lovely section of town, providing many photo opportunities. It is also the home of Hobart and William Smith Colleges.

Green Lake : Green Lake, located in Green Lakes State Park, is one of the most beautiful and unusual lakes I have ever seen. The lake has a very nice walking trail around its perimeter, which also provides excellent opportunities to witness its unique deep blue-green color. For more information on this lake and the reason for its unique color, click on this wikipedia link.

NY Lock 23 & 24 : According to this site, "Lock E-23 is the busiest lock, and Lock E-24 the second busiest, on the entire NYS Canal System..." Two good sources of information on New York State's Canal System are New York State Canals and New York Canal Times.

Oswego : With an extra long history, nuclear power plants, and its annual Harborfest, Oswego holds a unique place in central New York. The city however is going through the same sort of evolution found in many surrounding towns: businesses and people have moved of out of the older sections. There are some wonderful, old stone buildings with great architecture to be found there--churches, government buildings, and private homes. Some are still being used, some unfortunately are not, and the old downtown section now has specialty stores and restaurants.

Owego : Owego, New York is a town with a lot of potential. Unfortunately, it also has a lot of heavy truck traffic through some of its nicest sections. Though the Village of Owego has some interesting historical homes and small shops, the incessant traffic takes away any feeling of quaintness it might have. Maybe we just visited during the wrong day as it was during the week. Maybe it's quieter on the weekends.

Rome : Rome, New York, has a wonderful historic district near Fort Stanwix National Monument, a reconstructed Revolutionary War fort on James Street. Besides many stately old homes, the district contains Old City Hall, a number of impressive churches, and the grandest VFW building we have ever seen.

Seneca Falls : Here are photos from our day trip to Seneca Falls, New York. It was a disappointment to find out the Seneca Falls doesn't have falls. In fact, they only had some small falls years ago, which are now under water due to the canal system. They're also known as the birthplace of the women's rights movement. As we are more interested in the architectural history of towns, much of which no longer exists in Seneca Falls, we really didn't spend much time there. So, it could very well hold more promise than implied by this description and you may want to check this site to decide for yourself whether it's worth your time and gas money.
